A History of the STARBASE Program nationally Distance Learning (Video-teleconference) Building 32 Wyoming STARBASE Academy Wyoming STARBASE Academy are to stimulate student interest in Math, Science, and Technology AND teach students about teamwork and goal setting. We believe if students think about and plan for their life goals, they are less likely to do unhealthy things like using drugs or alcohol or becoming involved in gangs and/or crime. We teach entire fifth grade classes from Laramie County School District#1 and District #2 at our facility on the Wyoming Air National Guard Base in Cheyenne. We schedule all fifth grade classes in both school districts in addition to several private and parochial schools. Each class attends for four days. Distance Learning (Video-teleconference) Fifth grade classes from all around the state experience STARBASE by means of compressed video or video teleconference (2-way television). Teachers arrange for transportation to and from VTC sites near them (at community colleges, high schools and adult learning centers). The Department of Education's Wyoming Education Network provides the connections for these classes. We broadcast from the VTC site in our building. Sessions are usually limited to five classes. Our broadcasts are three hours long and occur twice for each group. Broadcasts are usually a week apart on the same day. We mail out the supplies in advance to the teachers so the students have everything they need to participate in our activities. We have twenty-two classes scheduled to participate in the upcoming school year in six sets of broadcasts. The Wyoming Air National Guard 153rd wing is a medical evacuation unit. They fly the C130 H-3 Hercules, an amazing aircraft. It can be used to transport cargo, people (in seats or litters), equipment such as small helicopters or wheeled vehicles, or to fight fires with Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS). It’s size and powerful turboprop engines allow it to take off and land on very short runways. Wyoming STARBASE Academy and 60 other STARBASEs across the country are funded through the Department of Defense. We are located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the state capital. Wyoming STARBASE Academy funding flows (in our case) through the Wyoming National Guard. Other STARBASEs are sponsored by the units of the Air Force Reserve, Marines or the Navy. In the fall of 2008 there will be sixty-two (62) STARBASEs operating in the United States and Puerto Rico. To learn more about the STARBASE DoD program click here.
